Goose Pond and Sugarloaf Conservation Area
For one of Newfound’s greatest outdoor experiences, explore the Goose Pond and Sugarloaf Ridge Conservation Area! You can park at Wellington State Park or if it’s plowed, at the Elwell Trailhead on West Shore Road (a little north of the Park entrance).
At this time of year, traction or snowshoes may be needed, but the views are worth the trip! Well-marked hiking trails provide access to Goose Pond and the Sugarloaf Ridge. There is a classic 1.5-mile round-trip loop to the summit of Little Sugarloaf (1,002 feet) which provides rewarding views of Newfound Lake, and on a clear day, the Franconia Range in the White Mountains. The return loop brings you through quiet forest, then along the north side of Goose Pond. For a trail map, please visit: newfoundlake.org/hiking. Dogs are welcome but must be leashed and owners are responsible for carrying out all pet waste.
Shackett’s Brewing Company – Great Beer, Friendly Atmosphere!
Jon Shackett opened Shackett’s Brewing Company in November 2014. In 2017, he left his teaching position and has dedicated himself full time to brewing at his new location in Bristol’s Central Square. If you enjoy great beer in a friendly atmosphere, we highly recommend stopping by. Jon usually has 6-8 options on tap, from Blonde Ales to Porters. If you’d like to try samples, flights are also available.
Step into the pub and you’ll often be greeted by Bentley, everyone’s favorite dog. You can play table shuffleboard or many game options at this family-friendly pub. Their delicious panini sandwich menu changes weekly. And did we mention live music? Check out their entertainment schedule on Facebook.
The pub is open Friday 4-9pm, Saturday noon-9pm, and Sunday 2-6pm from fall to spring, and will expand its hours during the summer season.
