Enjoy Scenic Views and Solitude on the Elwell Trail

Walk the beautiful Elwell Trail and explore some of Newfound’s finest conserved land. Parking is located just north of Wellington State Park on West Shore Road. This easy-to-moderate hike is one of our favorites for its expansive vistas — there are magnificent views from the Sugarloaf summits — and intimate solitude. Look for eagles soaring over Wellington Bay and beaver activity around Goose Pond.

Dogs are welcome but must be leashed, and owners are responsible for carrying out all pet waste.

NLRA Business Member Spotlight: Basic Ingredients

NLRA is proud to work with Newfound area businesses, and we enjoy sharing their stories. This month, the spotlight is on Basic Ingredients, located on 1777 Lake Street in Bristol, NH. NLRA Membership Director Karen Bemis recently visited owners Garlyn Manganiello and her son Michael to learn more about their connections to the Newfound watershed. On their way back to Massachusetts after vacationing in Plymouth, NH, Garlyn and Paul would often take the long way home via Newfound Lake because they loved the area and dreamed of living there one day. Their dream came true with the purchase of an old farmhouse on the south end of the lake. After starting their family with triplets, Paul’s job took them to Toronto. Each summer, the family returned to Bristol.

While in Toronto, Garlyn joined the Mothers of Twins Club and met several “foodies” who inspired her to take her first official cooking class: Bread Baking. As she practiced, she shared her loaves with friends and family. Back in Bristol, she supplied the old Lake Street nursery/farm stand with her bread, which sold out daily.

Back in their Toronto winter home, Garlyn began thinking about opening a bakery during their Bristol summers. The next summer, after hiring help for her toddlers, she and Paul converted unused space into a commercial kitchen. Built around an industrial grade oven — the same one she uses today — Basic Ingredients was open for business. With people already familiar with her breads, there was instant excitement about Bristol’s new bakery.

In 1995 the family made the permanent move to Bristol. The kids took turns in the kitchen and learned to be bakers — tough work, because summer work days were long and hot. Basic Ingredients continued to thrive and Garlyn added pies to the growing menu — now their signature product. One pie, the Peachy Pam was inspired by a long-term customer who wanted a peach/blueberry/cherry combination. Yum! Son Ryan suggested adding sandwiches, and Garlyn expanded selections to include lasagna, eggplant parmesan, chicken pot pies, salads, and more. Basic Ingredients can even cater your family party, bringing their great food to you!

Cooking Classes for Newfound
About two years ago, Garlyn was encouraged by friends to teach a cooking class. The evening was a success, and everyone enjoyed themselves immensely. Word spread, and the PSU men’s basketball coach inquired about a cooking class for his team over winter break. Garlyn took the 16 players under her wing and taught them how to create a romantic Valentine’s dinner, which was not only delicious, but useful in the future! 2018 will be Basic Ingredient’s 31st season. As Garlyn begins to imagine retirement, son Michael prepares to carry on the family tradition. With lots of experience, and a love for the area and its people, it’s a safe bet that Basic Ingredients will be satisfying old and new customers for years to come.

Basic Ingredients will open for the 2018 season on Memorial Day weekend, so plan to visit this summer!

Each cottage has a large living room with four windows, a glass door for light and air, and a separate bedroom with queen bed. There is a fully equipped kitchen with an eating area, microwave, electric drip coffee maker; and a bath with a shower, sink and toilet. The cabins have cable TV, microwaves, and electric heat.
