Join NLRA at Grey Rocks for a Fun, Hands-on Permaculture Event on July 16

Thanks to our wonderful donors, and as a result of our successful Three Year Plan fundraising efforts, work is continuing at Grey Rocks to restore this site to its natural beauty. Trees have been planted and a kayak launch has been added (see below left).

On Monday, July 16 from 2pm to 5pm, there will be a hands-on permaculture event for volunteers at Grey Rocks on North Shore Road in Hebron. You are invited to join us and learn how to create a garden from a lawn using an easy, fun and low-impact method. Resilience Planning & Design is providing the training and will offer insights into the method and the many benefits of these and other permaculture projects. Well-behaved dogs on a leash are allowed, but owners are responsible for removing all pet waste. Please remember, Grey Rocks is a Leave No Trace, carry-in/carry-out property.

Cardigan Country Store and Orchard Bistro Feature Local Produce, Crafts, and Food for an Authentic NH Experience

The Cardigan Country Store, located on 231 Lake Street in Bristol, had its origins in the 1970s, when the Bleiler family purchased a neglected orchard. After a lot of hard work, they were able to bring back almost all of the original trees. Since that time, they have planted more trees and now their orchard has about 1,000 apple trees of many varieties.

Five years ago, they opened the Cardigan Country Store and their son David manages the store. As you drive up to the entrance, you can tell it’s going to be a unique New Hampshire experience. Old signs cover the walls and you are greeted with delicious smells and a variety of goods for sale. One of the most trusted local markets in the area, Cardigan Country Store sells apples, homemade pies, jams, apple butter, and cider, along with local crafts from more than 20 vendors. There is also a cafe on premises that serves tasty breakfast/lunch menu showcasing local products.

But they haven’t stopped there! David recently hired a new chef, Allen Zick of Bristol and formerly with the Common Man, for the cafe and changed the cafe’s name to The Orchard Bistro at Cardigan Country Store. Now open year round, the Orchard Bistro serves brunch on Sundays from 9am to 2pm, featuring eggs and omelettes made to order, a meat carving station, cider donuts, eggs, bacon and sausages, homemade crispy potatoes, soups, salads, homemade pies and pastries, and their own English muffins!. The lunch menu has nine distinctive sandwiches and three salads. Along with serving breakfast and lunch daily, the cafe will soon be serving country dinners on Friday and Saturday evenings with a rotating menu including seasonal ingredients. Wine and beer will be available for purchase.

David’s goal is to serve the needs of the Newfound community, so he is testing different offerings, including “take and bake” meals or ready-to-serve homemade items, to see what works.

The store and bistro are open daily, except Mondays. In the event that Monday is a holiday, they will be open on Monday and closed Tuesday instead. With so many delicious offerings, it’s definitely worth the trip to eat and shop local!

Surround Yourself with Elegance and Charm at the Henry Whipple House

The grand old Henry Whipple House, on 75 Summer Street in Bristol, was constructed in 1904. Its’ Victorian era charm can be seen in the architecture, oak woodwork, chandeliers, and stained glass windows. In 2005, it became New Hampshire’s first B&B to be listed on the NH State Register of the Historic Places.

The main house has five chambers, and the carriage house has three suites. All rooms have private baths. You’ll enjoy the B&B’s elegant style, luxury linens, antiques, art, and bronze engraved fireplaces. Free WIFI, internet access, cable TV, and A/C. A guest kitchen is also available. Emma’s Perennials is a Gardener’s Delight

Emma’s Perennials, located on 398 Borough Road in Hill, is the place to buy plants, shrubs, trees and beautiful garden pottery and sculpture.

It’s a little off the beaten path, but well worth the trip – a must-see stop for any gardener, and one of Newfound’s hidden gems. Open daily 9am to 5pm.

Village Pizza Serves up Delicious Food and Fun

Village Pizza, located on 825 Lake Street in Bristol, is open for lunch and dinner Sunday through Thursday from 11am to 9pm and Friday through Saturday from 11am to 10 pm. Be sure to stop by every Friday evening now through September for the Village Pizza Cruise Night featuring antique cars, food discounts, driver prizes, and a 50/50 raffle. Everyone is welcome.
