At the turn of the century, Squam was quite different from the scene we enjoy today. The surrounding mountains were cleared by logging, sawdust several feet thick had settled in many of the coves, driftwood made navigation hazardous, and refuse including tires, mattresses and dead animals, had been dumped in the lakes.
In 1904, the Squam Lakes Improvement Association was formed by a group of concerned landowners. In 1905, the association was legally incorporated as a non-profit conservation organization and renamed Squam Lakes Association (SLA). The Squam Lakes Association is dedicated to conserving for public benefit the natural beauty, peaceful character, and resources of the watershed. In collaboration with local and state partners the SLA promotes the protection, careful use, and shared enjoyment of the lakes, mountains, forests, open spaces, and wildlife of the Squam Lakes region.

Mayhew challenges and helps at-risk New Hampshire boys to believe in themselves, work well with others, and find their best. It is the only all-boys program in the state that combines school-year mentoring and a residential summer program for at-risk boys, tuition-free, through high school graduation.

Since 1895, Pasquaney has pursued the goal set by its founder, Edward Simpson Wilson: “To provide a healthful and natural life in the woods, a life which will make boys strong, confident, … self-reliant and efficient, able to do and think for others as well as themselves.” We pursue this goal beneath towering white pines, on a mountainside above Newfound Lake, one of the clearest lakes in the United States.
Pasquaney encourages boys to appreciate the beauty of New Hampshire’s lakes and White Mountains; to understand the forbearance and self-control necessary in the give-and-take of group living; to grasp the chance, at all levels of competence, to be a participant rather than a spectator; and to learn the satisfaction of contributing to a community. Camp Onaway is a traditional residential summer camp for girls ages 9 to 15, located on Newfound Lake in Hebron, New Hampshire. For generations, we have provided girls with a place to discover their best selves. The magic of an Onaway summer is found in the return to simple living, the close bonds formed between campers and counselors, and the feeling of community that comes from spending seven weeks together.

Wicosuta is a traditional four-week sleep-away camp for girls in New Hampshire. At Wico, our goal is for every child to walk away feeling confident in herself and competent in her ability in any of a number of areas.

Through spectacular live animal exhibits, natural science education programs, guided Squam Lake Cruises, an informal public garden, and Blue Heron School, a nature-based Montessori early learning center, the Science Center has educated and enlightened visitors since 1966 about the importance of our natural world.
