Hit the Trails to Discover Newfound’s Beauty and Wildlife

One of the best ways to enjoy Newfound’s natural beauty is by following the hiking trails that run through NLRA’s Goose Pond and Sugarloaf Conservation Area. Start your journey at the Wellington State Park or, if it’s plowed, take the Elwell Trailhead on West Shore Road (located just north of the Park entrance). At this time of year, traction or snowshoes may be needed, but the views are worth the trip!

Well-marked hiking trails take you to Goose Pond and the Sugarloaf Ridge. There is a classic 1.5-mile, round-trip loop to the summit of Little Sugarloaf (1,002 feet) that provides rewarding views of Newfound Lake and, on a clear day, the Franconia Range in the White Mountains. The back side brings you through quiet forest, then along the north side of Goose Pond. See a trail map here. Dogs are welcome but must be leashed, and owners are responsible for carrying out all pet waste.

NLRA Business Member Spotlight: TwinDesigns Gift Shop

NLRA is proud to partner with many local businesses in the Newfound area. To introduce you to these businesses, we will feature an in-depth interview with a local business in each Perfect Day email. This month, the spotlight is on TwinDesigns Gift Shop located on 8 Central Square in Bristol. NLRA Membership Director Karen Bemis recently visited owners Brad and Jim Tonner.

When I arrived at TwinDesigns Gift Shop on a snowy, slushy morning, brothers Brad and Jim (shown left) were outside shoveling the stairs and sidewalk in front of their shop. Clearly, they take pride in their business and the town. Crossing the threshold of the shop feels like entering a bygone era; I immediately took note of the wood floors (original), high ceilings, and brick walls. TwinDesigns carries notecards, Newfound Lake memorabilia, games, mugs, jewelry, socks, t-shirts, Pendleton woolen blankets, and so much more. There are gifts to please every taste.

Although Jim and Brad grew up south of Boston, New Hampshire is in their blood. Eleven generations (since 1664) of their family lived in New Hampshire. Their ancestors, mostly farmers, founded Gilmanton. Growing up, Jim and Brad felt fortunate to spend many summer days enjoying the lakes of New Hampshire, with Newfound Lake holding a special place in their mother’s heart. She would tell them: “Newfound is Heaven on Earth!” How right she was!

After working for 27 years in the wholesale business in Manchester, the brothers felt like it was time for a change and decided to open an old-fashioned gift shop. They evaluated many location possibilities and decided on Bristol — it felt like they were coming home. Their grandfather had owned property in Bridgewater during the mid-1900s, and their family spent many summer weekends on Pasquaney Bay. The brothers opened TwinDesigns Gift Shop in Bristol in 2012, introducing local residents and visitors to their talents, charm, and their mascot — Diane the Turtle (shown below).

The story of Diane the Turtle
Diane’s connection with the Tonners started many years ago. Jim and Brad come from a creative family and, as children, were encouraged to write, paint, and draw. At a young age, Jim fell ill and had to spend time in bed. To overcome his boredom, he’d occasionally attach a small basket to a string and drop it out the window. Neighbors would put little gifts in the basket to cheer him up. One day, he reeled in a little turtle, and named her Diane. Encouraged by their dad, the Tonner brothers built a home for Diane, where she was nurtured and loved by the whole family. That was 49 years ago. I don’t know anyone else that has had a pet turtle for that long!

Before long, Jim began writing stories about Diane, which Brad would illustrate. In fact, Brad is an accomplished artist, whose landmark paintings were purchased by National Historic Centers. Jim and Brad went on to create a series of childen’s books. Their first, Glad He Is Our Dad, was followed by 10 more books — two of them feature Diane.

The story of Diane the Turtle began to spread and Newfound residents and visitors began to visit her regularly. She’s been featured on WMUR’s Chronicle and other news programs, and has become one of Bristol’s most famous residents. The brothers, along with Diane, have made friends all over the world. Each year, TwinDesigns Gift Shop hosts a birthday celebration for Diane. At her 49th birthday party last December, well-wishers ranged in age from one week to 109 years old. Diane and the brothers regularly receive cards, photos, and gifts from her admirers. Although the brothers love everything about the natural beauty of the Newfound area, it’s the wonderful people that are dearest to them.
